Volunteers from the American Red Cross and Patterson Park will knock on doors in our neighborhood on Saturday, March 7, to install free smoke alarms for any neighborhood residents who want them. The goal is to install 100 smoke alarms between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on that day.

On Friday, Feb. 28, volunteers will leave flyers about the program on residents’ front doors. Volunteers will return on March 7 to canvas the neighborhood and ask neighbors if they would like smoke alarms installed.
“We want to make our neighbors aware of this wonderful free service being offered by the Red Cross,” said Joyce Gibbs, Patterson Park Civic Association president. “Sometimes when people knock on our doors and offer us something for free, we are skeptical. This is a legitimate offer that has the potential to save lives.”

If you are a Patterson Park resident who wants a smoke alarm installed or would like to replace an old smoke alarm, you don’t have to wait for a volunteer to leave a flyer or knock on your door. You can call the Red Cross at 1-844-207-4509 to schedule the installation. The Red Cross can also order and install free smoke alarms designed for people who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Patterson Park residents who want to help the Red Cross with this effort can volunteer on Feb. 28 to leave flyers at neighborhood homes or on March 7 to help Red Cross teams canvas the neighborhood and install smoke alarms.
